Australian singer/songwriter Seamus Caplice has released his latest full-length album, God Fearing, Bible Reading, Jesus Loving Man. While listening to this album, I kept making the comparison to Carman if the newsboys were part of his backing band. There’s a mix of R&B, pop, and rock colliding together on this record to make for a unique sound. In terms of message, most of these tracks are testimonial in nature that encourage the listener to turn to Jesus for all of life’s needs. A couple tracks feel more personal as Caplice struggles with life and loss (“Can’t Stop Believing,” “Take Me Home”). The longest track, “Prepare Yourself,” takes a more confrontational tone, as it warns the listener to get ready for Jesus’ coming (it feels a little like Larry Norman’s “Watch What You’re Doing”). There’s nothing here that you haven’t heard on some other gospel record, but Caplice and his backing band put in quality work to make this album sound good. Some of the pacing feels a little off, with tracks sometimes overstaying their welcome (such as on “He Will Be There”) or cutting their visit short (“Can’t Stop Believing”), however. While God Fearing, Bible Reading, Jesus Loving Man feels like something of a niche album, it is entertaining to listen to and may garner Seamus Caplice a few international fans.

Jesus Freak Hideout (John Underdown): What’s a little bit of your musical background for those unfamiliar with your work?

Seamus Caplice: Career musician, songwriting, production, guitar player. I grew up in Sydney Australia, and for the last 20 years have been based between Sydney, Dubai, Manila, and Jakarta, where I have interacted with local musicians and studios in all these places.

JFH (John): I was quite impressed with your backing band. Who’s helping you and how did you all come together?

Seamus: Main contributors are: Bobby Velasco – Philipinno, Manila based, who does all virtuoso piano and keyboard parts. Syauqi Destanika – Indonsesian, Jakarta based, does female vocals and harmonies. Jeremy Gregory – Sydney based singer, high vocal parts. Keith Deleva – Philipinno, Manila based, guitar solos.

JFH (John): God Fearing, Bible Reading, Jesus Loving Man feels like it has eclectic influences. Who are some of your musical heroes?

Seamus: All the greats: Stevie Wonder, Prince, Marvin Gaye, Van Halen, Jimi Hendrix and some lesser knowns, Michael Franks, Dory Previn, also the Staple singers, Steely Dan, Donny Hathaway, Al Green.

JFH (John): Many of the songs are testimonial and encourage the listener to believe in Jesus. How important is this evangelistic aspect for you in your music?

Seamus: Not super important… it’s more that I’m adopting some of the Gospel preacher style when writing lyrics. But I just want people to enjoy the music, if they pick up the Bible as a result, then it’s an added bonus.

JFH (John): “Take Me Home” stood out to me as a very personal song. If you don’t mind sharing, what’s the story behind it?

Seamus: It’s based on my experiences with elderly relatives and their struggles with old age, and their desire to pass on… so the lyrics are from their perspective and dialogue with the Lord.

JFH (John): I was perusing your Spotify page and noticed you also do some pop/R&B music. How do you balance going between Christian pop/rock and pop/R&B?

Seamus: I take my cues from artists like Prince and Stevie Wonder, who wrote mainly straight pop, but on occasion would write Christian-themed songs. I would say that 1 in 10 songs I write are Bible influenced.

JFH (John): You have a pretty prolific output. What’s next for you as the year goes on?

Seamus: I try and complete at least 2 albums per year, one under my own name, and one for the other bands I play in, or artists I work with.

JFH (John): What’s the best way for people to support you and your music?

JFH (John): Finally, a silly question: Would you rather play guitar while getting your teeth worked on at the dentist or play piano while getting worked on by a chiropractor?

Seamus: Anywhere beats the dentist, so chiropractor.
