Christian artists remember the country music icon whose faith, generosity and unmistakable spirit touched generations
Country music legend Dolly Parton died August 25 at the age of 80, leaving behind a legacy that reached far beyond country music. For decades, Parton spoke openly about her Christian faith, recorded songs rooted in the Gospel, and used her enormous platform to encourage, support, and collaborate with artists across generations.
Her faith was never difficult to find. It appeared throughout her music, her generosity, and the way she consistently spoke about God and her love for people. Following her death, Parton’s nephew Bryan Seaver shared a fitting reflection on her life, saying that she had “lived in the light” and was now “in the arms of Jesus.”
That impact extended deeply into Christian music. In recent years, Parton continued collaborating with some of the genre’s biggest artists, including Zach Williams on the GRAMMY-winning “There Was Jesus” and for KING & COUNTRY on their version of “God Only Knows.” For Christian artists who grew up listening to Dolly, her influence was both musical and personal.
The response to her passing has reflected just how universally beloved she had become. On the night of her death, the Empire State Building illuminated its tower in sparkling pink beginning at 9:25 p.m., a clever tribute to her iconic hit “9 to 5.” President Donald Trump also ordered flags at federal buildings, military installations, embassies and other U.S. facilities to be flown at half-staff through September 1 in Parton’s memory, something she would have no doubtly refused after a history of ensuring her mission and politics didn’t overlap.

One of the great highlights of my life was getting to produce “River of Happiness” for Dolly for the Capitol Country Hymns Record “I’ll Fly Way”. She was so kind and wonderful in every way. Showed up early – 8:30 in the morning- and sang like the angel she is. Afterwards, she asked if we wanted a picture, so I ran and grabbed my fam (and yes, my youngest does have a diaper on!). Dolly would think that’s hysterical. Rest easy, sister – surely you have flown away to glory this day!”
