Tommis & Company is an independent group that bills themselves as a modern-day Alan Parsons Project — meaning that there are two key members with a bunch of others contributing to the band. Tom Levan and Donn Halliburton are the core members here, but worship leaders from several local churches have also provided their talents to the making of The Wonder of You, Vol. 1. This 6-track EP is a teaser for the upcoming full-length worship album that will be initially released in three stages. The first EP features excellent production and a sound that is reminiscent of the 90’s worship movement — especially something like Petra’s highly popular Petra Praise, Vol. 2 from 1997. In fact, there are a lot of comparisons that can be made between this EP and Petra’s overall sound from that era.

The opening song is “Blessed Be Your Name.” No, it’s not that “Blessed Be Your Name,” but it is inspired by Matt Redman’s classic hit of the same name. This is one of the earliest songs written by Levan and was one of Halliburton’s favorites. Donn Halliburton is singing lead here, but he’s also joined by Jazmine Gonzalez (Jaz Gon), who is a local worship leader. She also shows up on “No One Else But You” and “Word of Truth, Word of Life.” Lyrically, these songs are very worshipful in nature. Praise, adoration, and gratitude are the focus of the album. Musically, a lot of 70s and 80s rock influences are present here. The same can be said for the vocals. However, don’t let the influence fool you into thinking this is classic rock album or something — that’s simply not the case. While Tommis & Company is a little more acoustic based, Petra is a great band to think of as a comparison. All six songs here are done well, but “How Can It Be?” is the standout track for me as it encompasses the heart of the project. Halliburton starts by singing, “I just want to thank You. And I just want praise You for saving my soul and for making me whole. Yes, I just want to thank You.” It’s got a catchy melody, and goes on to talk about all the great things God has done for us. It also features a great guitar solo in the back half!

Fans of very modern worship, like Elevation, The Belonging Co, or similar artists/churches, may not connect to Tommis & Company in quite the same way. This, simply put, is not that type of worship music. However, fans longing for a return to the sound of an era where reverb and delay weren’t the most used guitar effects, may find a lot to love about The Wonder of You. Certainly, fans of Petra’s worship output, Sonicflood, or even a legacy band like Delirious? may feel much closer to home here. Classic inspired sounds, coupled with a timeless message, make for a worship EP that is a fun listen all around.

With The Wonder of You, Vol. 1, CCM outfit Tommis & Company show that they’re more than capable of producing songs that both glorify the Lord and display a natural talent for songwriting and musicianship. Their style is mostly reminiscent of older and classic CCM and worship, using more of a pop rock-based sound than most of what you hear today. Names like Sonicflood and Delirious? come to mind, while “How Can It Be?” bears a passing resemblance to Kutless’ Strong Tower. The vocals are a lot more of the classic rock variety – I could even picture some of the vocals fronting a band like Kansas. But despite all of the comparisons, it wouldn’t be best to write them off for simply being a soundalike. Tommis & Company wear their influences on their sleeves, but they also write thoughtful and worshipful originals that are pleasing to the ear and perfect for Sunday morning congregations. If any of this sounds of interest to you, go spend some time with The Wonder of You and give them a follow on streaming services, as they keep pumping out fresh new tunes on a regular basis.
