Jesusfreakhideout.com: JNDJ, “Wounds – Single” Review

JNDJ is a husband-and-wife heavy rock duo with a sound that brings to mind acts like Evanescence, Lacuna Coil, or the lesser-known Drain S.T.H. (now rebranded as just Drain) that carries little more of an Alice in Chains vibe than the others mentioned. Singer Julissa (Veloz) Girardi is a classically trained opera singer, and you can hear that influence coursing through her vocal performance on their new track “WOUNDS.” Musically, their sound fits the bill as well, featuring darker moods and tones with Jesse Girardi’s heavy guitars.

The song talks about how our wounds in life are healed by Christ and how He uses them to draw us to Him more. The track has an interesting layout and basically contains two different choruses. The second chorus could possibly be classified as a bridge, but it doesn’t function as a typical bridge. In this section, Julissa sings, “Never come back here; not the way it works no second chances. So I’m broken by You because You let me see the truth. Your wounds are so faithful, You’re cutting out the lies and I’m grateful. You make me see. You make me believe.” While, at times, the lyrics can be a little wordy, the melody does work well. Overall, it’s a catchy song that will undoubtedly have you bobbing (or banging) your head along to Julissa and Jesse’s heavy and atmospheric soundscape (there are some cool things happening behind the main rhythms).

JNDJ has only released a few songs so far, but they are showing great promise early on with a heavy rock sound that is seeing a bit of a re-emergence today. Lacuna Coil is a great reference for sound (or to a lesser extent, Magdalene Rose). However, if you’re wanting that heavier goth-like sound from a band that has embraced Jesus as the foundation for their lives and their music, look no further than JNDJ.
